Christmas gossip – move aside Bad Santa, Krampus is here. Did Santa Claus have an evil twin?
Well, not exactly but he seems to have an evil counterpart.

Krampus is a beast-like creature from the folklore of Alpine countries thought to punish children during the Christmas season who had misbehaved.

According to folklore, Krampus purportedly shows up in towns the night before December 6, known as Krampusnacht, or Krampus Night. December 6 also happens to be Nikolaustag, or St. Nicholas Day, when German children look outside their door to see if the shoe or boot they’d left out the night before contains either presents (a reward for good behavior) or a rod (bad behavior).

Krampus is a half-goat, half-demon, horrific beast who literally beats children into being nice and not naughty.

Krampus isn’t exactly the stuff of dreams: Bearing horns, dark hair, and fangs, the anti-St. Nicholas comes with a chain and bells that he lashes about, along with a bundle of birch sticks meant to swat naughty children. The good kids get a gift from St. Nicholas and bad kids get a gift from Krampus – a wooden stick. He then hauls the bad kids down to the underworld.

Krampus, whose name is derived from the German word krampen, meaning claw, is said to be the son of Hel in Norse mythology. The legend is part of a centuries-old Christmas tradition in Germany, where Christmas celebrations begin in early December.

A more modern take on the tradition in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic involves drunken men dressed as devils, who take over the streets for a Krampuslauf—a Krampus Run of sorts, when people are chased through the streets by the “devils.”

Why scare children with a demonic, pagan monster? Maybe it’s a way for humans to get in touch with their animalistic side.

Krampus’s frightening presence was suppressed for many years—the Catholic Church forbade the raucous celebrations, and fascists in World War II Europe found Krampus despicable because it was considered a creation of the Social Democrats. #christmas #santa Claus #krampus #holidays #traditions

ISIS, terrorism

In the explosive publication by European Centre of Information Policy and Security (ECIPS) called ISIS in Africa, last friday, the ECIPS established the ISIS tree as divided into two different trees linking the ISIS alliance to several African organizations such as Qibla and Boko Haram. The report makes it clear that our border focuses should not only be on the Syrian epidemic but also urgent attention should be brought to the African continent particularly travellers from Africa such as South Africa. The reports deals the presence of radical Islam that can be felt and seen across Africa and the recent development of the ISIS crises can be seen within Africa with a particular systematic development in South Africa.

ECIPS warns that one of the main part of the problem dogging an effective response to the spread of ISIS is the danger of political correctness and the problem in understanding the language of radical Islam. the report writes : “We could argue and ask what would an effective strategy be ? Is Obama doing the right thing to engage only in airstrikes ? Some might argue yes and some might argue no. The point is that ISIS is swaying the position whilst the US can’t react fearing ISIS sleeping cells, its own problem closer to home, to be awakened in the HIVE cell of ISIS, of which by now, the CIA would have realized ISIS might have acquired the knowhow in how to do things to calculate the probable desirable outcome. The problem we face is, what happens when ISIS has learned from their experiences and pass it on to the next evolving product that will be born from ISIS in the future ? “

For many people religion provides a way to engage with God. Religion can provide a sense of security and reliability as well. However, it can also provide reasons for very bad actions such as the millions that have been killed in the name of religion

Putin purging schoolbooks

Education, school

It really irks me when someone messes with a child’s education-
Russia Purges Schoolbooks, and Putin’s Friend Profits
The purge began in late winter. One by one, hundreds of textbooks that Russian schoolchildren had relied upon for years were deemed unsuitable for use in the country’s 43,000 schools. The reasons varied, but they shared a certain bureaucratic obstinacy.
One publisher saw all of his company’s English-language textbooks barred because he had failed to include their subtitles on the paperwork required for government approval. More than three dozen books that use a popular creative teaching style were dropped from a list of authorized titles because the publisher had submitted copies of supporting documents, rather than the originals.
Then there was the case of the colorful math textbooks published by a decorated educator, Lyudmila G. Peterson, cashiered for using characters from popular foreign children’s stories. Illustrating math problems with the likes of Snow White, Eeyore and Owl, in one expert’s decisive opinion, was “hardly designed to instill a sense of patriotism” in young Russian minds.
By the time the school year began this fall, the number of approved textbooks for Russia’s 14 million schoolchildren had been slashed by more than half. The summary winnowing by the Ministry of Education and Science upset lesson plans, threatened the livelihoods of nearly two-dozen small publishers and left principals, teachers and parents puzzled and angry.
There was, however, one standout winner: A publishing house whose newly appointed chairman was a member of President Vladimir V. Putin’s inner circle, Arkady R. Rotenberg, a judo sparring partner from Mr. Putin’s St. Petersburg youth.-
